Where to begin

Use this section to get oriented before you start searching. You don’t need to do everything at once.

Get access

  • Access Web of Science
To use all features, you need to be logged in through your institution.
On campus, access is usually automatic. When working remotely, you may need to sign in through your library.

  • Create an account (recommended)
An account lets you save searches, set alerts, and work remotely.
You can search without an account, but you’ll need one for these features.

Choose how to search

  • Start with Smart Search
Best for exploring a topic or getting started quickly.
Use natural language—no special search rules required.

  • Use Advanced Search
Best when you need precision or are running a complex or systematic search.
Gives you full control over fields and Boolean logic.

What to do if something doesn’t look right

  • Having trouble?
If features are missing or results look limited, you may not be logged in through your institution.
