Working remotely

If you are working off campus (remotely), you can access Web of Science in one of these ways:

  1. Connect using your institution's VPN
  2. Sign in through your library's proxy or authentication page
  3. Log in using your personal Web of Science account

VPN or proxy access

If you’re not on campus, your institution may require you to connect through a VPN or sign in via your library’s proxy page so it can recognize you and give you access.

If you don’t see the Documents tab in Advanced Search, you may not be logged in through your institution, which limits access to some Web of Science features.
When working remotely, try one of the options above, or contact your librarian or administrator to verify your access.

Smart Search Landing Page

Smart Search is the default search experience in Web of Science. It’s designed to be easy to use and helps you quickly explore a topic.

You can type a question, concept, or set of terms in plain language—no special search rules required. Smart Search automatically looks across multiple fields and returns AI-ranked results from the Core Collection.

Because Smart Search focuses on discovery rather than precision, it’s especially useful at the early stages of research or if you’re new to citation databases.

Smart Search features:

  • Accepts free-text input
  • Searches across multiple record fields (such as title, abstract, and author keywords)
  • Supports searches in multiple languages

Advanced Search Landing Page

If you can search for documents, you are signed in correctly and have access to your Web of Science subscription.

Advanced Search is best for users who want more control over their search. It lets you choose where your terms appear, combine them using AND / OR / NOT, and build searches you can save and reuse.

Because every field in the Web of Science Core Collection is carefully indexed, Advanced Search works in a structured and predictable way. This makes it ideal for complex, focused, or systematic searches.

Advanced Search features:

  • Uses field tags (such as Topic, Author, and Address)
  • Supports Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT)
  • Ideal for complex or systematic searches

Using Web of Science in Your Preferred Language

You can change your interface language at any time using the language selector in the upper‑right corner of the page. The layout and functionality remain the same - only the language of the labels and menus changes.
