Address Abbreviations

Clarivate maps abbreviated address terms to known full address terms and contrariwise. This allows you to use abbreviated address terms or full address terms to search for records containing the abbreviated term and the full term.

If the publisher of a source document abbreviated a common address term, the publisher's abbreviation may appear in the record. If you are familiar with an abbreviation that is not in the help list, try searching for it along with the full term. An abbreviated term will retrieve records in which the term appears in the Address field of a record. For example:

• Astron finds Astron in the Address field but not Astronomy
• Constr finds Constr in the Address field but not Construction
• Oper finds Oper in the Address field but not Operating

When searching the Address field, enter the abbreviated term and the full term to retrieve records that contain either term. For example, Astron OR Astronomy

Address Examples

The system maps abbreviated address terms to known full address terms and known full address terms to abbreviated address terms. For example:

• Ave maps to Avenue and Avenue maps to Ave
• Med maps to Medicine, Medical, and Medicinal and these three terms map to Med and to each other
• Pkwy maps to Parkway and Parkway maps to Pkwy
• Univ maps to University and University maps to Univ

Automatic Expansion

The automatic expansion of addresses does not work for multi-word terms. For example, entering AF will retrieve records in which the term AF appears in the Address field, but it will not retrieve records in which the term Air Force appears in the Address field and contrariwise.

Other terms that don’t work include:

• AFB and Air Force Base
• AIDS and Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome
• PO and Post Office
• POB and Post Office Box
• US and United States
• Vet Adm and Veterans Administration

When creating an address query, we recommend you enter both the abbreviated term and the full term connected with the OR Boolean. For example, PO OR Post Office retrieves all records that have either PO or Post Office in the Address field.

Country and Region Abbreviations

Names of countries/regions are spelled out in the product as space permits (up to 15 characters). The following are abbreviations used for countries/regions with names longer than 15 characters:

When formulating address search queries, enter both the original country/region name and the new country/region name in the Address field. For example, Cent Afr Empire OR Cent Afr Republ may increase the number of results that the system returns.
